The China Society for Oceanography (CSO), in collaboration with the Chinese Society for Oceanology and Limnology (CSOL), the China Institute of Navigation (CIN), the Chinese Institute of Command and Control (CICC), and the China Ocean Mineral Resource R&D Association (COMRA), recently announced the winners for the 2023 Top Ten China Marine Science Advances Expo. Qingdao led three key achievements among the winners.
The three accomplishments include: "Mapping the Largest Animal Genome to Date," "Significant Progress in Research on Neogene Organic Carbon Burial in the Global Oceans," and "Discovery of Increased Frequency of Prolonged La Niña Events Due to Global Warming." Led respectively by the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, Ocean University of China, and the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, these projects represent foundational marine research, showcasing Qingdao's expertise in this field.
These research findings, published in leading journals Cell (Elsevier) and Science (AAS), are crucial for several areas of marine science. They advance the understanding of the environmental adaptation mechanisms and population evolution of Antarctic krill, the burial of marine organic carbon in both historical and current contexts of global warming, and the global carbon cycle and climate system evolution. Additionally, these research findings provide significant insights into the diversity of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events and their future changes.
