QINGDAO DAILY, Aug. 4 — Qingdao has won approval for a special pilot project under the aegis of the National Transport Powerhouse initiative after China's Ministry of Transport launched a nationwide program this year to enhance traffic survey capabilities on ordinary national and provincial highways. The pilot project, which aims to support port-city integration across the Qingdao metropolitan area, was jointly proposed by the Qingdao Municipal Transport Bureau and the Qingdao Highway Development Center and has now received official approval.

In line with the development plan for Shandong's national demonstration zone under China's National Transport Powerhouse strategy, the national pilot project is expected to reinforce Qingdao's role as a leading demonstration city and accelerate the development of Qingdao as a pioneer zone within the province's transport modernization initiative. Leveraging Qingdao's strategic position at the intersection of land and sea transport, the project will use technology to modernize highway transport with a focus on improving commuting across the metropolitan area and integrating transport data. It will coordinate the construction, upgrading and integration of multifunctional traffic survey stations in Yantai, Weifang and Rizhao within the Qingdao metropolitan area with the help comprehensive traffic data where up to 480 sites have been planned to form a regionwide traffic monitoring network anchored by Qingdao and jointly supported by the three other neighbouring cities. The pilot has two clear objectives: to improve the efficiency of port collection and distribution networks and deepen port-city integration while making travel safer and more convenient for the public. The project also aims to deliver tangible benefits that meet public expectations of a national pilot programme and establish a replicable Qingdao model to support national and regional development strategies as well as integrated port-city development.

With the intent of using this national pilot project as a springboard, Qingdao will keep construction on schedule while unlocking the value of digital technologies in transport. The city will pursue a dual-track approach: improving everyday travel for residents while using the pilot to spur economic growth through closer port-city integration. It is anticipated that the completion of this project to a high standard will help Qingdao to leverage modern smart traffic surveillance systems to drive the integrated, high-quality development of the Qingdao metropolitan area and advance the implementation of China's National Transport Powerhouse strategy at the local level.
