Qingdao is a city passionate about sports. It has an extensive network of sports facilities, with over 30 large sports venues, and a per capital sports area of 3.3 square meters, ranking among the top in China. The city currently has five professional football clubs, including two Chinese Super League teams: Qingdao Manatee Football Club and Qingdao West Coast Football Club. In the 2024 season, Qingdao will be one of only three Chinese cities to host top-tier league football derbies. Additionally, Qingdao's basketball teams, the Qingdao Guoxin Xiongying Basketball Club in the CBA (Chinese Basketball Association) and the Qingdao Guoxin Haitian in the Basketball Super League III, are strong contenders in their respective leagues. Qingdao has also hosted two CBA All-Star Games and a draft conference.

Qingdao is also renowned for its athletics, especially marathons which have been hosted for several consecutive years, gaining both national and international acclaim. The race course in Qingdao has been recognized as one of the most beautiful marathon routes in China.

Qingdao is recognized by UNESCO as the ninth "City of Film" in the world and is the only one of its kind in China. The city's historical significance in the world of cinema is exemplified by the fact that China's first-ever movie theater was established in Qingdao.
